To change the PhraseVault® summon shortcut, open Settings → Preferences, click Record next to Summon Shortcut, press your preferred combination, and click Save preferences. The default is Ctrl+. on Windows or Cmd+. on macOS.
How do I change the shortcut?
- Open Settings from the gear and go to Preferences. With PhraseVault in front, you can also open Settings with Ctrl+, on Windows or Cmd+, on macOS.
- Click Record next to Summon Shortcut, then press the combination you want. Include a modifier key such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, or Cmd on a Mac.
- Click Save preferences to apply your choice.
To restore the default, click Reset, then Save preferences. Recording or resetting a shortcut only takes effect when you save.
On macOS, the recorder treats both Control and Command as Cmd, so you can't assign a shortcut that uses Control instead of Command. After changing the shortcut, the tray or menu bar tooltip may still show the default; use the combination you saved.
What if the new shortcut doesn't work?
If PhraseVault shows Shortcut is already in use by another application, try a different combination. Code editors, chat tools, and system shortcuts are common sources of conflicts. PhraseVault rejects Alt+Tab, Alt+F4, and combinations without a modifier; other shortcuts may also be unavailable, depending on your keyboard layout and operating system.
How do I pick a good shortcut?
- Choose a combination your other apps don't use. On Windows, a shortcut with Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Shift is often a good starting point; on macOS, try Cmd+Shift.
- Test it in your email app, browser, and editor after saving.
- Keep the default if it already works well for you.
The shortcut opens PhraseVault with the search box ready. Type a few letters to find your phrase, then press Enter to insert it.
What about Linux?
On Hyprland, PhraseVault does not register a global shortcut. Settings → Preferences shows the bind line next to Summon Shortcut, with Copy, instead of Record.
phrasevault summon exists only with the Arch package. The AppImage does not provide that command. Bind the AppImage file with --summon, using the path where you saved it. Those steps are in Install PhraseVault on Linux.
Omarchy
Omarchy configures Hyprland in Lua. Add this line to ~/.config/hypr/bindings.lua. Hyprland reloads when you save the file.

Other Arch systems with Hyprland
On a classic Hyprland config, add this line to ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf, then reload Hyprland:
bind = CTRL, PERIOD, exec, phrasevault summon
That binding summons PhraseVault, and automatic paste uses it. The window floats and centres itself. CTRL + PERIOD is an example: any free key works, and one key should have one summon path.
