PhraseVault® is an alternative to Espanso and Beeftext if you'd rather search for a saved phrase than expand an abbreviation while typing. It runs on Windows 10/11 x64, on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 13 or later, and on Linux (x86_64, built for Omarchy and Arch with Hyprland). Automatic paste and the summon shortcut need Hyprland, and the AppImage is best-effort on other distributions. It is an option for Beeftext users moving to a supported Mac. If you want automatic abbreviation expansion on Mac or Linux, Espanso remains a free option; Beeftext is Windows-only.
To insert with PhraseVault, press Ctrl+. on Windows or Cmd+. on a Mac, type a few letters of the phrase name or its unprotected content, and press Enter. You choose the text through search, so there's no trigger list to memorize.
Which tool fits the way you write?
As of October 2026, PhraseVault Starter costs $29 or €29 once, including applicable taxes. Espanso and Beeftext are free. Other PhraseVault tiers and prices in your currency are on the pricing page.

When is Espanso the better choice?
Espanso suits you if typed abbreviations are central to your workflow, you want Linux on desktops other than Hyprland, or you use an Intel Mac. As of October 2026, it's actively releasing updates; version 2.4.1 was released on September 2, 2026. Its downloads include Windows installer and portable builds, a Universal macOS disk image, and Linux packages for X11 and Wayland. Check the Espanso releases for builds and requirements.
You configure matches in YAML files. If you're comfortable with that and your triggers work well, you may have little reason to switch. PhraseVault offers an app editor, search, and an optional phrasevault command line for scripts, but has no Intel Mac build. On Linux it is built for Omarchy and Arch with Hyprland; automatic paste and the summon shortcut need Hyprland, and the AppImage is best-effort on other distributions. The source-available guide explains how its license differs from licenses such as Espanso's GPL-3.0.
When is Beeftext enough?
Beeftext is a free Windows tool that expands abbreviations, called combos, as you type. As of October 2026, the project is in maintenance mode: no new features are planned, but fixes for major issues are promised. Its latest release is 16.0, from December 31, 2022. If your existing combos work and you only use Windows, keeping it is a reasonable choice.
Beeftext has no Mac version. Espanso is an option if you want the same abbreviation habit on Mac; PhraseVault is another option on Apple Silicon if you prefer search and paste.
How do I import my Espanso phrases?
In PhraseVault, open Settings, select Database, then choose Import Phrases and select your .yml or .yaml file. The former trigger becomes the phrase name, with the leading colon removed. Replacement text, Markdown, and HTML retain their respective formats; simple form fields such as [[name]] become fill-in fields.
Regular-expression triggers are skipped, and matches using variables may not convert fully. The limit is 10 MB and 10,000 phrases per import file. Review the import preview and test your important phrases before relying on the new library. The import and export guide covers the full process.
There is no direct Beeftext import. Copy the texts into PhraseVault manually, or keep Beeftext on your Windows PC while trying PhraseVault on a Mac.
What does everyday search and paste look like?
Save a phrase under a name you can remember, such as "Support sign-off", then find it when you need it. On a Mac, enable Accessibility permission for automatic pasting; without it, PhraseVault copies the phrase to the clipboard for manual pasting. The basic guide explains how to save and insert phrases, while text replacement in Windows 11 compares other Windows options.
